What a funny time of year...

This time in between Christmas and New Year needs a name of it's own.  It's not quite Christmas, not quite New Year, just a kind of middle ground.  Some people have taken extended holidays, whilst others are back to the grindstone after a brief break.

I think that a lot of us still feel very much in the party mood, and work, although quieter for lots of us, offers a good distraction from the excesses of Christmas.

The good news is that this means that many of us can spend our evenings (or days if we are lucky enough to be off) catching up with some of the years best films.   Some of our top titles of the year have included Sherlock Holmes, Avatar, Shutter Island, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and 2012.

Children and families alike have enjoyed Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief, Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.  We've also got some great World Cinema options such as Heartbreakers, Lebanon and MicMacs.

New Releases this week include The Last Exorcism, Jonah Hex and the popular Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  We also have some great December releases in store, such as Knight & Day, The Last Airbender, Eclipse and Inception.  So if you didn't get one of the top titles from 2010 in your stocking this year why not pop in to catch up on some fabulous films.

We are business as usual today and tomorrow and will be closing early on New Year's Eve.  We'll be offering 4 films for £10 on December 31st, and the great news is you get to keep hold of them until 6th January so start 2011 with a fabulous film fest!

Snow Business

It's been a very challenging week or two for the people who live and work in and around Dunblane.  This weather has been testing even the most resilient of us!

Throughout it all we have managed to stay open at Gadget Hub, albeit operating reduced hours.  We even managed to open for a few hours on Sunday as promised.  Deliveries are proving to be problematic, but fortunately we had pre-ordered much of our Christmas stock so are managing to supply the town with toys, collectables and independent wines.  The latest releases have been delayed, but with over 1600 titles available in the shop you are bound to find a movie that suits your mood.

Our planned opening hours during this adverse weather are:

Midweek 10am - 4pm
Friday/Saturday 10am - 6pm
Sunday 12.30 - 4pm

If in doubt call us on 07725 161 837 or e-mail us shop@mygadgethub.co.uk before heading out in the cold.

Friday Cocktails!

Thank goodness Friday is finally here.  We love this day of the week and the Friday Feeling of anticipation for the weekend is catching.  A lot of people enjoy a drink over the weekend, so we thought it might be nice to share some of our favourite Cocktail recipes with you, just in time for the Festive Season.

The weather outside has turned very frosty, with temperatures plumeting.  Fortunately as Christmas is just around the corner we have the most wonderful excuse to start making Mulled Wine or Gluhwein.

The Gadget Hub Gluhwein recipe is:
1 cinnamon stick
6 cloves
1 bottle of red wine (we recommend Namaqua Soft & Fruity Red only £4.99)
30ml port (try our Krohn LBV port for £13.75)
1 tablespoon sugar
lemon & orange, thinly sliced
Combine cinnamon, cloves, wine, port, sugar and lemon/orange in a heavy based pan.  Heat gently without boiling.  Serve warm; do not strain.

The festive season always needs a bit of Sparkle - there are lots of different ways to use Champagne or Sparkling wine in cocktails, but our personal favourite is the Champagne Cocktail.

The Gadget Hub Champagne Cocktail recipe is:
1 sugar cube
dash bitters
15ml brandy
chilled champagne (We recommend J.M.Gremillet at just £17.50 or why not use our Dolci Colline Prosecco at £9.75)
Place the sugar cube in a champagne flute.  Add a dash of bitters and then the brandy.  Slowly top up with champagne.  Delicious!

TOP TIP:  When making chilled cocktails pop your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before starting.  You can also dip the rim of the glass in lemon juice and then in sugar for a nice frosting effect.

For the kids, drivers or non-drinkers why not consider the non-alcoholic classic Shirley Temple.
The Gadget Hub Shirley Temple recipe is:
dash of grenadine
lemonade
ginger ale
Place some ice in a highball glass and add a dash of grenadice.  Fill to the top with equal measures of lemonade and ginger ale.

Enjoy your Friday Night!

Magic for Muggles

Arthur C. Clarke’s third law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

For all you Harry Potter would be's out there mystical magic can now be performed by us mere muggles (people with non magical ability according to JK Rowling)!

The Kymera Magic Wand was recently featured on BBC's Dragons' Den, where Duncan Bannatyne bravely fought off offers from the other 4 dragons to secure a deal.

It's magical ability to control gadgetry within your home is a real wonder to behold.  Anything that uses infra-red technology can be controlled with the magic wand, so now with a simple swish of your hand you can open and close blinds, change TV channels or even pause live television.

This must have gadget has been reviewed on BBC's "Something for the Weekend", Channel 5's "The Gadget Show" as well as too many gadget blog and tech websites to mention.

Utterly astounding this is a beautifully crafted gizmo that is oh so simple to use.  Straight away the quality that exudes from this product is impressive.  From the white cardboard carton, to the faux dragon skin and red brocade silk lined box, even the instructions are beautifully presented as a folded parchment.  The wand itself is weighty and supernaturally pulses to let you know that it is ready to learn, and after about 10 - 15 minutes practice you are ready to train it.  You can assign various functions to to various moves, flick to change tracks, spin to turn up volume, swish to dramatically turn on etc.  Before you know it you'll be using one of the 13 predefined gestures to mystically control all the gadgetry around you.

This is the remote control for all confirmed gadgeteers out there!  In Dunblane it is exclusively available at Gadget Hub for only £49.99 - pop in to see us demonstrate it and have a magical Halloween!

200 years ago you would have been burned at the stake for displaying this kind of witchery, but then you wouldn't have had a 50" Plasma to show it off!

Silly Bandz!

Watching GMTV this morning I was delighted to see Lorraine Kelly et al talking about one of the products we have just started stocking at Gadget Hub.  Silly Bandz or Rubba Bandz are trend-setting designer bracelets favoured by celebs, including Sarah Jessica Parker, of Sex & The City fame. These are little shaped bracelets that come in a variety of designs and colours, that are worn round the wrist and pop back into their shape when taken off.

Our collectables are considered mainly for children, but clearly in this case they can be collected and worn by people of all ages.  SJP is pictured above sporting a yellow silly bandz with her layered selection of designer bracelets.  The trend is causing a huge stir in America, with some schools even resorting to banning them as the children are so focused on swapping and trading them.

So it's nice to know that those of us in Dunblane are ahead of the trends, as we stock a full range of these designs, priced at just £1.99 for a pack of 12.  Pop into the shop to have a look at some of the collection available, including farm animal shapes, body shapes and mystical shapes.  Trend setting starts here!

Monday 5 July 2010

Wine Available Now!

I am so excited to be able to tell you that Gadget Hub has now officially obtained it's license to sell Alcohol on the premises.  So now as well as your favourite film you can pick up a great bottle of wine to compliment your evenings entertainment.

Whether a fan of red, white, rose or sparkling we are sure to have something that suits your taste.  Prices start at only £4.99 and all of our wines are sourced from independent vineyards, so you won't find them in the supermarket.

We've also tried to bring you some fantastic scottish related products, including our Champagne Marie Stuart which is named after Mary Queen of Scots (as close as you can get to Scotland in a Champagne in our opinion) and our organic Le Vin de Levin, made by Scotsman, David Levin.

With wines available by the bottle or the case, and free delivery throughout Dunblane,  pop into our shop for a look and a taste of something different.

The Invasion of the Collectables!

Here in the Gadget Hub we've had a very busy week, what with the huge success of the High Street open day on Monday and the fantastic feedback we got from our winetasting.  Champagne Marie Stuart was the big favourite receiving 5 out of 5 for both taste and value from every person that tried it (and there was a lot).  We also managed to get a snapshot of Owner Gerard Gourley in the Allanwater News, showing off some of the fantastic independent wines we hope to have available from July.

With the summer holidays fast approaching we have expanded our range of collectables to encourage every boy and girl out there to keep their bedrooms tidy for the whole of the summer break!  The 2 Junior Directors here at Gadget Hub have been very busy assessing all of the options and have both had hands in deciding which items we stock.

We now hold Hello Kitty Plush Keychains, selling at £3.49 - courtesty of our 3 year old girl Junior Director.  After a lot of searching we have tracked down some Club Penguin Plush Puffle Keychains, £3.99, thanks to our 7 year old boy Junior Director.  Both are also extremely enthusiastic about the new range of Rubba Bandz bracelets that come in a packs of 12 at £1.99.  These are in a range of designs from farm animals to mystical creatures and even body parts!  The latest craze to hit the UK, coming over from the US.  These bracelets can be collected, traded and worn by boys and girls alike and are a great fun accessory for all ages.

So if you are looking for healthy encouragement that will keep the kids happy, and ensure that your summer is full of smiles pop down to our shop in Dunblane for collectable inspiration!

World Cup Widows

All over the country couches are about to be tested out for endurance, beer kegs are being stocked up and men are ready for the World Cup - kicking off tomorrow night.

At the Gadget Hub we appreciate that not everyone is delighted about this!  So if you are a World Cup Widow then pop down to see what we have to offer.  With a huge array of Chick Flicks there is sure to be something to please you.  Why not send hubby off to a friends or local pub to watch the football and invite some girly friends around for night of indulgence, with chocolate, a good film and maybe a bottle of wine or two (we are hoping to receive our alcohol license early in July).

We have classic titles, such as Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia, The Holiday and Bridge Jones Diary.  You could also try some of our latest romcom's including All About Steve, It's Complicated, The Ugly Truth and Did you hear about the Morgans?

If romcom's aren't your thing - why not try a fright night with fabulous titles like Paranormal Activity, The Stepfather and Daybreakers to send a shiver of fear down your spine.

For an award winning night in you could enjoy Crazy Heart, A Single Man, An Eduction or the remarkable Precious.  Why not pop a bottle of fizz and get glammed up to make you feel like you are at the awards ceremony!

Remember that on Saturday Nights we also offer you 4 Movies for 2 Nights for only £10.00.  So, whatever your taste, we're sure to have something to suit in our football free haven - The Gadget Hub!

What's On Watson?

Sherlock Holmes has been the big rental of the week.  This incredible all action blockbuster features Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, with Jude Law as his trusted ally Watson.  Their on screen chemistry is a joy to watch with Law creating a strong and watchable character in Watson, rather than the usual bumbling portayal in previous movies.  The banter between the two main characters is quick witted and lively and shows a real connection which demands a sequel.

Mark Strong is superb as villian Lord Blackwood a psychopath obsessed with satanic rituals and dominating the streets of London. The twists and turns in the plot are truly worthy of a Sherlock Holmes mystery and offer plenty of opportunity to demonstrate Holmes genius.

Directed by Guy Ritchie the mood set for Victorian London is atmospheric and the connection between the characters remains tense and strong through the whole film. Hans Zimmer's score blends well with the tone of the film, and suits Downey Jr's quirky characterisation of Holmes.

All in all this is a tremendous action packed adventure with clever plot twists and phenominal special effects, even better enjoyed in hi definition through Blu ray.  It's sure to keep you hooked right until the end, and leave you wanting more.

Gadet Hub Recommends

We have been very busy at the Dunblane Gadget Hub selecting a few choice films that we recommend as great viewing.  Note these are not the titles you will see in the latest top rental selections.  These are some of the key films we've watched over the years and have loved.

Current titles in this section include As Good as it Gets, Some Like it Hot, Saving Private Ryan and Derailed to name a few.  We'll be reviewing it over the coming weeks and changing and adding movies we are watching.  When you're next in Dunblane High Street pop in have a look and let us know what titles you would like to see here.  You can also add a comment to our blog here and we will make sure we watch each recommendation.
